what's up?

rub it, rub it

gratuitous post here. of all the cars that reine has, this one isn't my favorite.

it's hard to get over your first love, but i go ahead and shoot all his new babes when i see them. he is keeping them on the other side of the 605 this year, so i don't get to see them or him very often.

silly rule, but whatever works for him. can't wait to see the flavor of the month if he shows up at the uptown show this august, breaking his own rule.

------

now i get to do some work for work, when i would rather be out at a car show, under this perfect overcast for pictures. :(

gypsy blue

was lucky enough to catch a few shots of this motorcycle, right after the owner parked it, and before too many people got to this end of the street. really clean, and the muted turquoise and off-white paint caught my eye. little pinstriping detail on the fenders was nice too. i'll have add a few detail shots when i get back home to my computer.

positioned like he had scoped out the location and knew exactly how and where he wanted pictures to be taken. framed by the mural, it's almost like it belongs there, blending in just so.

i've seen a bunch of other people's pics of it, so i'm not the only one that thought it.

walked past it right before we left, and there was no way i could have taken the same shot, with the crowds around and the owner lounging nearby in his chair.

even though my better half had joined up with me and walked to the end of the street, where the majestics were having a mini picnic/party, and then back on our way out, he says he didn't notice the bike or the mural. i guess it can happen when you're on chevy overload. ;)

pig's ear

found my better half talking to the owner of this fleetline. we had both been taking turns shooting it -- front, back, side, details -- so much to see. my better half yells over the din, that the owner was "busting his balls."

uhhh, what?

said the guy wondered why, is this ocean of beautiful cars, why the heck were we taking pictures of this one?

all he could think to tell him was, "that it had character."

could have added all that fun texture, the pinstriping, the fact that it isn't ashamed of it's blemishes, and even emphasizes them. and hell, it still has all the curviness that i love about fleetlines.

it may be the pig's ear in that old saying; but way more interesting than a silk purse.

needle in the haystack

saw this impala on my way out of the swap meet. i was wading my way through the sale stuff, the junkers, the beaters, the project recyclers, so many odds and ends. frequently find the occasional gem in this lot. i figure they got there too late or otherwise didn't want to pay the show price, but still wanted to be part of the pomona experience.

spotted this one from two rows away. got over to it and set up, and waited to get my shots in between other admirers of the car. it was next to a pop up, so it somewhat limited the angle--to try to not show it.

did not realize the owner was waiting to leave, until i'd already taken a few sets. so thanks for that. totally forgot to shoot the front; no matter, it's the back end of these that i like best anyway. and pinstriping was pretty cool too.

rain, rain, go away

so i had to get my taxes done friday afternoon. weather reports kept saying it was going to rain all weekend, but it hadn't started yet. so i took my camera bag with me to the appointment. it was close enough to the elks club show, figured i'd drive by and see if anything was happening.

hadn't been there in several months. as expected, they lot wasn't as full as it should have been. rain, rain, go away. i guess i thought that too much, since it still hasn't rained all weekend.

stuff i wanted to shoot really didn't show up, at least while i was there. made the best of it, and enjoyed myself before heading back home to finish my work day. chatted for a few minutes with another photographer, i hadn't seen before. you get to know the regulars. we should have a secret handshake or something.

anyway, work was waiting, so i packed my bag, and took about ten steps toward the car, when this plymouth drove up. and drove to the back of the lot. so yes, i walked all the way back there, and pulled everything out again.

turns out i saw it earlier in the month, though not with the additional side and roof paint. i recognize the pinstriping on the front.

so i got a few shots to keep me happy.

divining rod

i wandered through all the parking lots at the majestics new years' show, and back. new stuff arrived and i'd go back and try to find it. some cars had too many people around them on the first pass, but i got them on the next one.

that seems to be the only way to deal with a bigger show. pretty much why i just don't go to the really major shows people tell me about...just too many people...unless i can be there at the same time cars are rolling in.

this one i probably would have passed by, but there was no one in the way, and the paint on it was pretty well done. but looking at it now, i can't decide if it was the lens, or if that big phallic thing on the trunk was not quite centered. sort of the angle of the dangle...between two girls...boys and their fantasies. lol. at least it's up.

i would just be pissed, or would it be obsessivly crazed, to drop a crap ton of cash on a custom paint job and find it just a tad off.

been working too much, or should i say, i have too much work. wishing they'd hire another person. trying out a contractor on a couple of simple jobs, but they're located in northern ca, so can't really get a feel for them, and i haven't seen their portfolio. should be interesting.

still, i have another couple of intense weeks coming up at work, so probably will be too fried to post much again. happy to have realized a bit late that it was a holiday weekend, but that just means i gotta work even faster to meet the deadlines. ugh.

lucy lucy lucy

been a crazy week at work. i do have some deadlines i gotta work toward this weekend, but i'm still trying to have "a weekend."

spent the morning in the oc, watching my kid play in one of his alumni baseball games. unfortunately, both high school and college games were today, so he picked high school. probably because his best friend, and former team mate was in town, before heading off for spring training for his minor league team.

another of his former roommates should be starting this year in the  major league. maybe i can weasel some tickets from him. my kid chose to pursue a law degree, and is about to graduate. he should pick one of his friends, and work on their contracts.

anyway, after the game, figured i had options for the balance of the day: go home and work on my deadlines; get some lunch and go home and work on my deadlines; or i could drive out to norco, to see if there was anything worth seeing at the all american working iron show. guess what i picked. its called avoidance.

i don't miss the drive out toward riverside. anyone else feel like they're driving in the wild wild west going east on the 55 freeway? there always seems to be accidents, and people drive even more like idiots than other freeways. like there are no lane lines, swerving around the semi trucks. for get physics of stopping that much weight.

been a while since i've gone out to that big boy, and the parking lot was busy, but not crazy full like other shows they have there.

this one mostly had trucks, vans, and any cars that may have been used on farms back in ye olde times. and old cars were welcome too. unfortunately, many of them had their hoods up, so that cut my stay time by a lot.

i was about ready to leave, not finding a lot to keep me interested in shooting, when this car drove through the lot. was hoping it wasn't leaving, and happily saw it park way at the end, away from most of the show. i headed back that way directly, just in case.

owner was still sitting inside, on a cell phone. he jumped out when he saw me setting up. wasn't necessary, i was low, and he wouldn't have been in the shot at all. anyway, i took a few angles of it, and liked this one best. silhouettes up on the light pole, and the side view of the car; seemed appropriate.

one of the things i noticed when it originally went by, was that there was a big ole' lucille ball on the trunk. i couldn't get a good straight up shot of her, because he'd backed up against some plants i didn't want to totally walk around in or on.

owner said his wife really loved lucy—didn't everybody? he said he just happened to be driving by, wasn't really there for the show. can't remember where he said he lived, but i think he was just as far from his home as i was.

i shot quick. he had been on the phone with his wife, and had to get going. thanks for waiting while i got my fun on.

------

back home now, and decided not to do any work today at all. that, and also cuz my better half had my computer set up all taken apart, in order to put a battery backup on it. if his mom has her heater turned on, and someone runs the microwave, it blows a fuse. which means, my computer crashes. has happened one too many times.

and i got a new back up drive, that i'm filling up as i type. gotta make sure its working. still has not quite three hours out of five left just for all the pictures i took last year, and january this year.

gotta go clean my camera sensors now. hoping to wake up early and head out to hillco for the super cruise before the big game. hard to get parking for that thing.

after that, then i really do have to get my job done. meeting on monday morning to present the designs.

la sucia

i have a headache. maybe i'm a barometer...its going to rain. took a walk uptown, to grab some lunch. bunch of motorcycles, and the blue and white at the cigar bar. maybe more will show up later, so i'll go for another walk.

liked this fleetline. well, i like fleetlines in general. liked the simple pinstripes. owner moved a hat out of the way in the back window, probably so i could get a clean shot of the plaque. thanks.

golden glow

don't know what this is for sure. i liked the pinstriping.

background was kinda interesting. but too challenging with the traffic to really get a good shot. couldn't stand out the street very long before another car would come zooming by, looking for a place to park.

i had the day off...MLK, office was closed. i should have been sifting through paperwork for taxes. can you tell i'm stalling?
